Our aim was to create a beautiful Shaker kitchen which fused the necessities of a functional family space with elegant design.
Our brief for this modern Shaker kitchen was to create a functional family space which joined the dining and living areas of the lower ground floor in a family home in Clifton, Bristol. Lower ground floors are generally very good locations for kitchens but they can present challenges – space and light being key.
This family kitchen needed to be ‘toddler-proof’ but that didn’t mean it shouldn’t hold its own in the style stakes. The classic and brilliantly adaptable Shaker style famed for its simple, refined design was the obvious aesthetic choice to create a timeless, considered space.
Keeping surfaces clear and tidy, custom-made storage solutions including a functional larder cabinet where the kettle and toaster could be hidden behind closed doors, allowed for additional work surface.
We specified solid hardwood for the frames and doors, based on its inherent strength and smart finish, alongside crown cut oak veneer on a birch ply core for the carcasses (an extremely stable and water-resistant choice). A hardworking, durable finish was key here, so we applied four coats of our environmentally-friendly, clear matt finish to the carcasses and all oak. The painted wood (in Farrow and Ball Monkey Puzzle) was finished with our ‘Anti-Scratch’ coating.
We fabricated the Corian worktops in-house – choosing white with our client to help with the light and to contrast the green and the oak cabinetry – and the visible dovetail joints of the oak fronted drawers hinted at the traditional craftsmanship techniques we value to ensure our designs last a lifetime.
