Dezeen X Planted | A sustainable showcase

In September 2020, as part of London Design Festival, the influential architecture, interiors and design magazine Dezeen teamed up with contemporary design event, Planted, to present a virtual showcase of sustainable design brands and products.

Initially planned to launch in September 2020 but now delayed until May 2021, Planted is a contemporary design event, reconnecting cities with nature; their purpose is to present a more sustainable vision of urban living by showcasing beautiful products and design ideas today which do not damage tomorrow.

With an overdue but growing movement toward sustainable manufacturing processes in the face of man-made climate change, Planted showcases brands playing their part in reducing waste, respecting the environment and reconnecting with nature.

We’ve brought together our pick from their online showcase of established and emerging brands to watch out for…

Anglepoise+Original+1227+Brass+Desk+Lamp+Ink+Blue+2+(1)This iconic British lighting brand introduced a lifetime guarantee on all its products this year.

In 1932, when vehicle suspension engineer George Carwardine invented a spring, crank and lever mechanism that could be positioned with the lightest of touch yet would maintain its position once released, a blueprint for the first Anglepoise task lamp was born.

In 2020, Anglepoise introduced a lifetime guarantee on all of its products as a response to the current trend of products built without longevity in mind and destined for landfill. If a customer has a problem with their Anglepoise, the lighting brand will repair it for them where possible and if that is not an option, it will replace and responsibly recycle the old light.

Baux building materialsBAUX was founded on the belief that building materials should be sustainable, functional and remarkably beautiful. BAUX designs, produces and markets functional construction materials that meet the contemporary expectations of architects, engineers and contractors – without compromising tomorrow’s safety and environmental standards.

Woodwool, contains two of the world’s oldest building materials – wood and cement – bound as wood wool. The combination is simple yet ingenious. Wood fibres give the product a heat-insulating, heat retaining and sound-absorbing structure while cement is used as a binding agent and provides strength, moisture resistance and fire protection.

The most recent BAUX product is the ground-breaking Acoustic Pulp – 100% bio-based, 0% waste. The BAUX Acoustic Pulp panel is the first in the world to uncompromisingly combine the performance properties of sound absorption, safety and durability with sustainability and modern aesthetics.

Form & Refine is a Danish brand founded in 2018 by Helle Herman Mortensen, Jonas Herman Pedersen and Lasse Lund Lauridsen with a common vision; to develop a value-driven brand that explores materials, alongside the preservation of the Earth’s resources and craft cultures, through exceptional design.

It is a brand that praises materials, form and sustainability equally. By carefully selecting pure materials from around the world and having these crafted nearby using skilled traditions, they form collections of Nordic design that will refine as the years progress.

Our+wool+low+res+landscapeNaturalmat use only natural, sustainable and wherever possible, certified organic raw materials to handcraft organic, natural & luxury mattresses, toppers, bedding and beds for babies through to adults.

Over two decades ago, keen sailors Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall began experimenting with the use of breathable, natural fibres as an alternative to synthetics commonly used on boats that were not only notoriously warm, but largely uncomfortable.

In 2000 Naturalmat was born, in the family boatyard (now solar-powered bed workshop) on the banks of the River Exe in Devon where they still make everything by hand, sticking to the same founding principles to this day.
