A modern family kitchen

Muted tones and clean lines come together to create a contemporary take on classic style.

Elegant, understated styling was introduced into this Cornish farmhouse with a modern family kitchen designed with both practicality and socialising in mind.

The brief was to create a family kitchen that would stand the test of time (and grandchildren!) whilst providing a practical space for the avid cooks in the family.

A modern take on traditional, classic styling incorporated birch ply cabinetry with slab doors featuring square grooves to create a wide plank effect, all finished in Farrow & Ball Blackened. Push catches were used to keep the lines clean and Silestone worktops in a suede finish (with a matching chopping board made from the hob cutout to reduce waste) completed the modern, understated aesthetic. Colour and individual character were injected into the space with an open bookcase to display treasured, well-used cookbooks, always easily on hand.

A single oven and compact oven, dishwasher, pull-out bin with recycling cabinet and a full-height fridge were all built-in to keep the design unified. LED lighting provided task lighting over the countertop and sink while the cooking area focused on the hob in the island (with a slim extractor overhead), designed to face the bar seating to allow both the cooking and the conversation to keep flowing.

Storage was maximised with a hidden larder within a niche in the facing panelled wall. Housing shelving for tins and dry foods, drawer space for vegetables, a large spice rack and a worktop with power and lighting for freestanding appliances and a coffee machine, this secret storage allows the main work areas of the kitchen to remain clear and clutter-free.
